Syracuse track and field secures spot in ACC Indoor Championships

Over the past three days, Syracuse’s track and field visited Virginia Tech for the ACC track and field indoor championships.

On Thursday, the men’s and women’s distance medley relay placed. The men’s team placed ninth, finishing in a season-best 9:53.64. On the women’s side, the Orange placed eighth, running a season-best 11:20.50

The main action for Syracuse started on Friday in the 5000 meter. Nathan Henderson led the way for Syracuse, placing sixth overall and coming in at a personal best of 13:48.36. JP Trojan came in two spots behind at eighth overall in 13:55.29 seconds. Matthew Scrape followed shortly after, coming in 15th (14:12.51). Rounding out the race for Syracuse was Jack Whetstone, who took 41st (15:21.92).

On the women’s side among both final races, Abigail Spiers took seventh overall and came in first amongst Syracuse runners with a personal best of 16:28.07. Ellie Lawler was the next Syracuse runner and came in 22nd (17:12.33), while shortly after her was Emily Lane (17:23.03). The last Syracuse runner to finish was Reilly Zink, who placed 27th (17:27.73).



The action continued on Saturday afternoon in the 60-meter hurdles, where Jaheem Hayles placed sixth in the finals finishing at 7.91. Anthony Vasquez, Naseem Smith, Isaiah Lewis and David Peters all did not qualify for the final round. On the women’s side, there were no Syracuse competitors in the final round. Shaleah Colaire placed ninth in the preliminaries (8.42), .01 seconds away from qualifying for the final round.

Following the 60 meter, Kahniya James took sixth overall in the final round of the 60-meter dash at 7.45. Kaleia Arrington also ran, matching a personal best of 7.84. On the men’s side, Trei Thorogood ran a personal best of 6.80 and placed 12th. He did not qualify for the next round.

In the 200 meter, both on the men’s and women’s side, no Syracuse runners made it to the final. Colaire placed 20th (24.89), Janelle Pottinger placed 24th (25.17) and Arrington placed 29th (25.62). On the men’s side, Thorogood placed 20th (22.00) and James Nmah placed 26th (22.33), both personal bests.

The next event was the 3000 meter. On the women’s side, Annie Boos was the highest-placing Syracuse runner at 11th, finishing in 9:26.91 seconds. Sydney Nowicki set a personal best finishing in 9:50.21 and placed 29th. Just a couple spots behind her was Emma Eastman who placed 31st (9:51.16). Finally, Sophia Jacobs-Townsley placed 42nd at 10:04.83.

On the men’s side, Henderson finished fourth, setting a personal best of 7:51.48. Trojan took 15th in the 3000 meter in just over eight minutes at 8:08.41. Scrape placed 23rd at 8:12.28 and Kevin Robertson placed 26th at 8:14.13. Finally, Ethan Wechsler placed 40th (8:25.96) and Noah Beveridge placed 48th (8:35.09).

In the final race of the meet, the women’s 4×400 team placed 13th out of 13 teams, finishing in 3:48.85.

Overall, Syracuse’s women’s track and field team placed 14th out of 15 teams, scoring a grand total of six points throughout the various events. The men’s side performed better, coming in 13th out of 15 teams and finishing with a total of 12 points.
